How high should a bird feeder be off the ground?

Different types of birds are comfortable feeding at different heights but the ideal height for a standard bird feeder to be from the ground is approximately 1.5m. Additionally it should be about 3m away from any trees, shrubs, or structures.

Why do robins not eat from bird feeders?

Even the hungriest robin does not normally eat bird seed. Robins cannot digest seeds, and their beaks are not built for cracking. However, a very smart, very hungry Robin that has observed other birds at feeders can learn to try birdseed! How do I encourage birds into my garden?

Make them feel at home. Reduce the opportunities for predators like cats and hawks by placing feeders where the birds can spot danger easily. Avoid using garden netting, especially during the breeding season, and place feeders away from your house to minimise the risk of birds colliding with windows.

Do birds eat from feeders at night?

Yes and no. Nocturnal birds will feed during the night, while diurnal birds will only feed at dusk and dawn. Diurnal birds are the common garden birds you’ll find at your feeders on and off throughout the day.

Do bird feeders have to hang?

You might want to place your feeders so that you can enjoy the birds while relaxing or hanging out on your patio, garden deck or balcony. Since each bird requires its own “personal space away from humans”, the feeders need to be a certain distance away from your favourite watching spot.

How many bird feeders should I have?

And really, it is largely up to you. You could choose a single feeder or a dozen. My advice is to start with one feeder and see how it goes. Add more if you find you enjoy feeding birds and if you want to feed more birds or more types of birds.

Can you overfeed garden birds?

The bird underneath all that stores fat in specific parts of the body. To answer your question, no it is generally not possible to overfeed them, as they only eat as much as they generally need.
